Perspectives: Growth over time.

“It’s the job that’s never started as takes longest to finish.” – Sam Gamgee

You’re closer than you’ve ever been to accomplishing your goal.

How do I know?

Because you’ve already started.

Starting the work sets you on a trajectory towards the middle. And though, for a while you might get lost in the middle of your goal—fit, reading, writing, saving—you might stumble along the way.

When you began, you were closer than you’ve ever been.

And with every day, you get one step closer to where you want to be.

James Clear, in his book Atomic Habits talks about the 1% rule. It’s the idea that every day you improve or work towards your goal by 1%.

The impact of 1% growth compounds.

After one day, 1% seems small.

But after 100 days, your investment more than doubled.

The final outcome is infinitely greater than when you started.

It requires you to start. And when you start, you are setting off this compound growth pattern.

Not only will you increase your investment 168% with every 1% growth, the increase also increases.

The increase increases.

Your investment multiplies.

It doesn’t if you don’t start.

And just as important is the start, so is the ongoing management. John Maxwell said, “Make your decision today, manage your decision daily.” It’s the day to day work, showing up when you don’t want to, not knowing how to show up that makes the difference between where you are and the power of compound growth over time.

We start—and we’re closer to the finish than we’ve ever been.

And then we continue. We pace our growth, little by little, because we know that even something small matters—every day counts. Every word written counts. Every push up counts. Every mile matters.

Don’t get discouraged along the way of accomplishing your goals. Growth and development take time.

But it doesn’t take as much time as not starting at all.
