Reading with a pen.

By Danny Porter

Did you know it’s okay to write in books?

No, not books that you don’t own. But the books you do own.

You can write in them.

Why would you do that? Why do I do that?

I write in my books because I can tend to forget a couple months later all the topics and lines that stood out to me the most. I’ll be having a conversation with a friend and be reminded of a quick quote from a book, pull out the book and…. It’s blank. I have no idea where to look. And if I happen to find it, which is often not the case in a short period of time, the moment is gone. The quote no longer helps the conversation grow, it caused the conversation to stall.

So I write in my books. I underline, I ask questions, I make marketings.

Because I’m going to come back to this book in my future. And the wisdom is there.

I read recently that you can use your pen as a shovel to dig for gold.

There’s gold in every book.

It’s yours to discover.

A pen helps remind you where the gold is. Like writing a treasure map, you know where to come back to when you need the gold again.

That’s why I read with a pen.

Do you?
